Body armor, sometimes called body armour, personal defense armory, or hard armor, is specially designed to absorb or deflect impacts in combat. The original purpose of body armor was to protect soldiers from injuries sustained during battlefield combat. But since the 1960’s, they have been used for everyday protection by law enforcement officers and security personnel. Today, body armor is popular with ordinary people who wish to protect themselves and family members from harm.
Body armor was originally made from steel, which was sturdy enough to repel bullets, but not powerful enough to stop large caliber handgun fire. Over time, improvements were made and the material was changed to incorporate metal alloys, plastics, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and other synthetic materials that are lightweight and more durable than steel. Today, body armor is made from many different materials including ballistic nylon, ghillie suits (used by many hunters), heavy duty tear drop plastic, and high density polyethylene (HDPE). Body armor is used primarily for self-defense, but can also be used in a non-lethal fashion to protect police officers during hostile situations.

There are a variety of different types of body armor that are used for different purposes. They vary in strength, durability, and price, but all of them are commonly used in some form or another. Some of the more common types of body armor are:
Plate – A plate armor is usually made of hardened steel. The weight of the plate can be any number of ounces, although it’s most commonly found in the range of four to eight pounds. This type of body armor is commonly used by the US military, and is what you’ll see on the front of military vehicles. Although not very thick, the thickness of a plate armor is critical because if it is thick enough to stop a bullet, it also needs to have sufficient hardness to prevent breaking when it gets shot. This, combined with a tough outer layer, usually allows for a bullet proof vest to withstand many times its weight in outside impacts.
Dyneema – Also known as “halo wire”, “hot wires”, or simply “diy” (as in “diy bag”), dyneema is a type of body armor that is worn by members of the SWAT team. It is similar to other forms of body armor because it is constructed out of an extremely strong synthetic fiber. However, unlike most vests, this material does not absorb impacts as well as other traditional vest materials do. For this reason, it is only worn when the wearer is working with live ammunition, which makes it especially valuable when it comes to stopping pistol shots. Dyneema is often seen on members of the SWAT team because it is much more fire resistant than typical bulletproof vests.
Kevlar – A favorite among the law enforcement community, Kevlar is actually a metal alloy that has the highest level of similarity to humans’ natural collagen. This is why it is sometimes referred to as “the next human bullet.” It has a tremendous ability to resist many of the forces a bullet may encounter, including puncturing. While some law enforcement officers still use standard full-body bullet resistant vests and helmets, Kevlar is quickly becoming a popular choice for bullet resistant vests and helmets due to its incredible anti-flammation properties.
